Some time after the end of World War I, the army requested the modification of the helmet due to some inconveniences that arose, of a hygienic nature, this modification that was finally carried out in 1936 led to the A1 variant of the M1917 model, which only involved the modification of the interior lining.

When World War II broke out, the United States troops were equipped with this helmet, so when the US entered the war, this was the helmet provided, although the manufacture and incorporation of the new model was immediately arranged.M1.

The M1917A1 helmet was in use until 1942.
